Why Is It Useful?
Physiotherapists use POCUS to:

What Happens During a POCUS Scan?
Your physiotherapist will apply a small amount of gel to the skin over the area being examined. A handheld ultrasound probe is then moved over the area, producing a live image on the screen. You may be asked to move the joint or muscle during the scan to see how it functions dynamically.
Does It Replace MRI or X-Ray?
Not necessarily. While POCUS provides excellent detail on soft tissues like muscles, tendons, and ligaments, it doesn’t show bones as clearly as an X-ray or deep joint structures as well as an MRI. However, it is an excellent first-line tool that can help decide if further imaging is needed.
